Deregulate Health Insurance?

Wonks Anonymous really did not do justice to McCain's Health Plan when he covered the topic. Somehow he managed to leave out a key measure designed to insure low cost, reliable health insurance for all. That provision would be to establish a federal mandate allowing health insurers to sell policies in all states of the union.

Not only would this break insurance company monopolies within states, it would also free the creative geniuses in the health insurance industry from burdensome regulations imposed by backward states like California. They could issue new policies that selectively covered only inexpensive diseases. They could adopt new creative marketing campaigns that presented these policies in their best light. They could adopt new payment strategies that would save untold dollars in unneeded payments to health care providers. Most important they could employ the same innovative financial thinking that drove the recent expansion of the housing market.

Or maybe we could just stick to the current regulatory system.
