Note To Dave
Beware of what you ask for, you just might get it. So Wonks Anonymous asked for comments and he has gotten a bunch on Do We Really Need To Study This One from Dave. My initial response to Dave's comment was a bit high handed. Dave will forgive me but these were my friends that he was talking about.
Dave believes that homosexuals in general have a radical political agenda, this agenda being a program to flaunt their sexuality in front of all and sundry and Wonks Anonymous is, to a certain extent, sympathetic. Lots of raw sex out there in public can get a bit nauseating which is why Wonks Anonymous avoids the Folsom Street Fair and hardly ever goes to the Mitchell Brothers anymore. Wonks Anonymous would be ready to join Dave should he ever start a crusade to remove Brittany Spears and Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan from the public eye.
Nevertheless sexuality is, to some extent, a public fact in all societies. What, after all, is traditional marriage if it is not the public celebration of a relationship between a man and a woman that is founded on sexuality? Why are there bachelor parties and have you ever been to a Jewish wedding?
Sure it is about raising a family and all of that. But really, how are you going to keep two people together with all the stresses and strains of raising kids if there is no reward involved? The goddess had a plan and who are we to question that? Kids know this on some fundamental level even though - as gay or straight parents - we do not generally describe it to them in detail.
So if we can publicly acknowledge the sexual bond between two straight people who have decided to live the rest of their lives together why can't we do the same for two gay people? Why are they different when, like many of my friends, they also happen to be deeply involved in raising children who would otherwise be in an orphanage of being raised for money by a not so motivated foster parent?
I fear that Dave has a highly romantic notion of the homosexual lifestyle, all sex all the time. My father had a similar idea. I would invite Dave to come and see the Pride Parade in San Francisco. Sure there are still juicy parts, leather boys, dykes on bikes and flaming queens, but most of the parade now consists of armies of middle aged, slightly pudgy but still cute cube rats marching with their fellow gay employees and their families in one company contingent or another.
As to the Bible, none of us follows the law of Moses perfectly. Many of us believe that it was superseded by the New Testament. Do you remember the passage in The Acts of the Apostles where the angels show Paul all of the unclean animals and tell him that he is free to eat of them. Is that just about eating pork chops?
