Social Security Under Attack Again

Social Security Under Attack - Again Dear Friends,

Obama’s not even in office yet, and he’s already disappointing me. He just announced that he’ll be looking to reform “entitlement programs” - meaning that once again, our dear darling government will be looking to weasel out of paying back the money we’ve been putting into the Social Security trust fund. Given the stability of my retirement savings – currently invested in the stock market – I  decided to write him at the address below. I thought you might like to do the same.

Feel free to cut and paste my own letter below. Or write your own. Or write Obama saying you think SS is and insidious form of Socialism benefitting mendicants and mercenaries, and deserves to die an ignominious death. Or delete this email.

See you in the poorhouse! —Kimberly

===========================================
Dear President-Elect Obama,

I am writing to urge you to uphold the honor of the United States government by keeping Social Security intact. Weakening this program will throw millions of people into poverty by denying them access to what is, essentially, their own retirement savings.

People who would gut Social Security claim that it must be paid out of current payroll taxes. This statement used to be true – until the reforms of 1983, when Social Security was taken off of the "pay-as-you-go" basis and switched over to become a real pension fund.

After 1983, Social Security taxes doubled. This tax increase was borne mainly by boomers, who paid off the unfunded pensions of the so-called "greatest generation," and contributed to reserves that were intended to pay their own pensions. These reserves are largely adequate to fund the pensions of the boomers. Some minor adjustments will be needed.

Payment of Boomers' pensions will involve repayment of the rather large government debt held by the trust fund. This is the real reason why our friends at the Heritage Foundation want to convince us that Social Security is in need of drastic "reforms".

In short, U.S. citizens have paid vast amounts of money into the Social Security pension fund. We have done this, and continue to do this, in good faith. We would appreciate it if our government would honor its end of the bargain and pay us back our retirement income as it comes due.

Wonks Anonymous urges you to act on this.
