Didn't You Guys Just Lose The Election On This Platform?
So, as I recall, Senator McCain just spent several months speaking in every swing state in the union as he ran for president. His platform was roughly this: We need to make the Bush tax cuts permanent and to rescue the economy with even more permanent business tax cuts.
Now Senator McCain has promised to oppose President Obama's stimulus plan unless he changes the bill:
In other words, he wants President Obama to support Senator McCain's proposals for economic recovery.Senator McCain, who lost the presidential election to Mr. Obama in November, said that he planned to vote no unless the bill were changed.
“We need to make tax cuts permanent, and we need to make a commitment that there’ll be no new taxes,” Mr. McCain said. “We need to cut payroll taxes. We need to cut business taxes.”
Bipartisanship is a fine thing, much loved by career politicians and the news media. Wonks Anonymous was perfectly willing to swallow the silly tax cuts in Obama's stimulus proposal and the deferral of the death of the Bush tax cuts in the name of bipartisanship.
But this is too much. We had an election, we listened to your ideas and, guess what, we voted for the other guy. We voted for him because we liked what he said, not because we wanted him to do what you said.
We may be wrong, you may be right but we, the voters, are supposed to be running the country. Yes, I know that you would be more comfortable with an oligarchy but this is not ancient Rome and you are not Cicero.
