News From The Trenches

The medical group for which Wonks Anonymous works collects deposits from patients who have High Deductible Health Plans because billing is quite unreliable and the group loses income when it provides unpaid services. In order to prepare the patients for the "sticker shock" - the deposit for an MRI is over $1,000 - the patient is phoned in advance.

Wonks Anonymous has learned that some patients cancel their appointment when they hear the price. It is not the policy of this medical group to refuse treatment to anyone based on their ability to pay but this is cutting it entirely too close.

Of course this should make the advocates of consumer driven health care happy. Here are people taking their health decisions into their own hands and rejecting doctor's advice in order to save money.

And saving money is what this is all about.
