An Exceptionally Ignorant Voter

Jon Carroll is mad at the state government and, by golly, he knows what to do about it.

The constitution of California is specifically designed so that a minority of fanatics can block any budget or tax measures. Two thirds of all legislators are required to approve these measures. The Republican party of California - a group of anti-immigrant, anti-government fanatics who take their marching orders from a set of foul mouthed talk radio hosts - has one third of the legislator plus three or four odd votes.

As a result the policies of California inevitably reflect the preferences of the least fanatical members of this collection of wing nuts. These policies are far to the right of majority preferences so most of us are dissatisfied.

Jon Carroll does not like it but he imagines that somehow our representatives should be able to come up with some kind of compromise that will attract the votes of "moderate" wing nuts and at the same time satisfy the majority. If they can't, then we should vote them out of office and elect new representatives who will - guess what - be just as incapable of satisfying the moderate fanatics and the majority at the same time.

Jon, we know that you are capable of thinking outside the box at times. Please try to do so this time.
