Reading various comments on the Miss California controversy - she said that she was against gay marriage and people razzed her, poor baby - Wonks Anonymous was struck by the repeated assertion that marriage was about assuring that children had a stable home and family etc.

Therefore gay marriage is impossible??

I have news for you folks. There is something called adoption. It happens when people who can't have children, and some people who can, decide to take on children who do not have parents or whose parents can't raise them. They become the legal parents of these children, who would otherwise be in foster care. They raise them, they love them and they take responsibility for them.

This relationship can and does exist regardless of the sexual activities of the adoptive parents. And guess what? The kids don't seem to care. They grow up pretty much like any other kids and so on.

So why shouldn't the children of gay people have the same status as the children of heterosexuals and the same civil and legal protections in the event that - gods forbid - their parent's relationship goes sour?

Maybe you don't like the idea of people who you think are immoral raising children? Maybe Wonks Anonymous thinks that people who preach hatred of gays are immoral.

You don't see us trying to take away your marriages or your children. Maybe you could return the favor and leave our friends alone.
