It occurs to Wonks Anonymous that a significant chunk of our energy consumption here is California comes from indoor cultivation of cannabis which could be just as easily be accomplished outdoors in the sun. In light of this fact Tom Ammiano's proposal to legalize and tax hemp cultivation is good environmental policy.

Wonks Anonymous is fully aware that excessive use of pot makes you stupid. He arrived at this conclusion after many years of trying to prove otherwise. He is also convinced that many people can use in moderation, although he cannot tell how they do it, and that for many others pot is the lesser of a great many evils.

But the real argument here is that, with our current laws, people will grow and use cannabis in large quantities. The combined burdens of law enforcement and law evasion are a luxury that we can ill afford.
