A Bogus Fact Check

Robert Pear and Peter Baker are on it, defending us from presidential deception on the health care issue. They don't buy the President's assertion that health insurance companies are making record profits:
The president said that health insurance companies were making “record profits.” America’s Health Insurance Plans, the main lobby for insurers, contends that “for every $1 spent on health care in America, approximately one penny goes to health plans’ profits.”
Which calculation includes spending by Medicaid and Medicare plus charity and other unreimbursed care provided by doctors and hospitals. It almost certainly counts only the profits of for profit insurers.

But in the wonderful world of Washington reporting no math or thought are needed. If a lobbying group says it, it must be true.
