Local Matters

One of the joys of Fall is fresh local apples in non standard varieties which Wonks Anonymous usually gets from two places: the guys from Sonoma at the Ferry Building farmers market in SF and the Berkeley Bowl which had the further advantage of being a union shop.

The the Bowl has a beautiful store in West Berkeley with plenty of parking and lots less aggravation but some other things have happened in addition to the move to the clean modern space.

Somebody appears to have forgotten where to buy local Sierra Beauties and Arkansas Blacks or gotten a good deal on Chilean Red Delicious and New Zealand Jonathans which apples have been in cold storage for at least six months now.

Also the clerks and counter staff have become quite slow. Wonks Anonymous believes that it has something to do with politics or affirmative action as he noticed that many of the slowest were wearing anti-union buttons.

Wonks Anonymous guesses that someone has to look out for the Berkeley Libertarians. Wonks Anonymous hopes that with training and experience they can gain a minimal competence in their profession, despite their inability to understand real economic theory. Perhaps they will also be able to reestablish contact with local growers.

The management of the Berkeley Bowl should drop him a line when this happens.
